Charmouth is very fortunate in having today one of the oldest continuously run Inns in the country. As with the many buildings in the village that I have researched over the years for Shoreline it has a remarkable history stretching back to the Middle Ages when the village was owned by the monks of Forde Abbey.
Its name is a clue to its origins for an even older Inn at Norton St. Phillips in Somerset, bears the same name dating back to the 14th century. Our Inn may well be a contemporary as in the Abbot created a borough here and The Street was divided into half acre plots stretching back on both sides. The ancient north wall still stands today with many of the boundary walls of the plots surviving.
This had been the case with The George and the Tithe map reveals a plot slightly over a half acre. The name given to the Inn is again very historic and derives from our patron saint St. George and not the later Kings of England. I am quite confident that it was originally a guest house or Inn at the side of an ancient roman road that linked Dorchester and Exeter where travellers would receive hospitality. It was listed of historical interest in after being thoroughly surveyed as follows: Hotel, formerly coaching inn.
Across the vast land of Russia are scattered a numerous number of large cities and small towns where we can see legendary buildings dating back from the long past. These historic places vividly demonstrate architectural talents of Russians. Through strenuous recovery efforts, many of the ancient Russian buildings including 12th and 13th century white stone chapels have been restored to their original beauty to charm visitors.
In addition, frescos, ornaments and artistic handicrafts worked out in a variety of styles by great artists that typically adorn the medieval Russian churches, and superb architectural examples of ancient Russia displayed at open-air museums all demonstrate their inestimable aesthetic value. The historic, architectural and artistic heritage is the glory and pride of Russia. With an elevated pride in their tradition, the Russians have overcome tumultuous periods.

It consists of three parts – the old town to the east, and the middle and new towns to the west – of which the first retains some of the antique features of a Hanse town, while the last two are for the most part regularly and handsomely built. There are also several suburbs. The town has four gates, one of them dating from the 14th century, and some fine squares, among them the Blucher Platz, with a statue of Blucher, who was born here, and the Neue Markt.
Rostock was a fortress of some strength, but the old fortifications have been razed, and their site is occupied by promenades. Rostock has five old churches: St Mary’s, dating from to , one of the most imposing Gothic buildings in Mecklenburg, with two Romanesque towers and containing a magnificent bronze font and a curious clock; St Nicholas’s, begun about and restored in , and again in ; St Peter’s, with a lofty tower over 4 00 ft.
St Mary’s church contains a monument marking the original tomb of Hugo Grotius, who died in Rostock in , though his remains were afterwards removed to Delft. From till it had its seat at Greifswald in consequence of commotions at Rostock; and in it was again removed, on this occasion to Butzow. The professors appointed by the city, however, still taught at Rostock, so that there were practically two universities in the duchy until , when they were reunited at the original.
Rostock is the seat of the supreme court for both the duchies of Mecklenburg, and is well equipped with schools, hospitals, and other institutions. Although the population, commerce and wealth of Rostock have declined since Hanse days, it has a considerable trade, being the chief commercial town of Mecklenburg and owning a considerable fleet. Among the other prominent buildings are the theatre, the arsenal, the synagogue, the “Kaufhaus,” the town-hall Rathaus , and the observatory. Of the cluster of buildings in the centre, which are conspicuous from afar, the town hall Rathaus and the cathedral are specially noteworthy. Behind the Rathaus is the Grashaus, in which Richard of Cornwall, king of the Romans, is said to have held his court. In the 15th-century town hall Rathaus is preserved the golden drinking cup of Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, which was taken at the battle of Nancy in Halfway across this, on an artificial island, is the Rathaus rebuilt The three Gothic Protestant churches, the Marienkirche, the Nikolaikirche and the Jakobikirche, and the town-hall Rathaus are the principal edifices, and these with their lofty spires are very picturesque.
Hamburg has comparatively few secular buildings of great architectural interest, but first among them is the new Rathaus , a huge German Renaissance building, constructed of sandstone in , richly adorned with sculptures and with a spire 33 o ft.
